Review: Fabien Birgfeld
Moore,
Claire. "Fabian Birgfeld: Interior Landscapes." NY Arts, May
2002.
Fabian Birgfeld's striking color photographs capture the transitory spaces of International: airports, subway stations, and hotels. The images, presented as diptychs and triptychs, seize rare moments when these vast public spaces are devoid of all traces of their inhabitants. The characteristically frantic interiors are transformed into spaces of pause and contemplation as the structural language of the architecture is explored.
As you make your way through the exhibition what becomes uncannily clear is the consistency of these environments from one interior to the next. In spite their sources: France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, there is a remarkable correspondence between them. We are lead up vast stairwells, around blind corners, and down endless corridors through a series of anonymous landscapes.
The artists' background in architecture, a Master's degree, no doubt informs her interest in exploring how these monumental structures impact our movement within them and reflect the paradigm shift that is occurring as we move toward the reality of a global community.
